Make sure you visit this page again before you travel in case of any change and read Qantas Conditions of Carriage for further information.

Your Carry-on Baggage must:

  • fit under the seat in front of you or in an overhead locker (musical instruments must be placed in an overhead locker. See the Musical Instruments information below);
  • not exceed the Carry-on Baggage allowances; and
  • not include any Dangerous Goods unless permitted for carriage.

If your baggage meets the above requirements, but we reasonably believe that it is not safe for your baggage to be carried as Carry-on Baggage, we may require you to check it in.

Current Qantas and QantasLink Carry-on Baggage allowances for adults and children (except infants) are as follows.(See the Musical Instruments information below).

Your checked baggage allowances are determined according to your itinerary and provided to you at the time of booking. If you already have a booking, you can view your ticketed allowance at Manage Your Booking or ask your travel agent. If you are about to make a booking on our website your ticketed baggage allowance will be confirmed on the review page before payment.

Note that different baggage allowances may apply each time you check in your baggage. If you check in your baggage for a multiple sector journey, usually the baggage allowance of the most significant carrier in your itinerary will apply. However, different rules may apply to tickets to and from the USA or Canada, as described below.

Allowances for Qantas Frequent Flyers

Some Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club members are entitled to an additional non ticketed checked baggage allowance. This allowance applies to travel on:

  • Qantas and QantasLink operated flights with a “QF” flight number (excluding services to and from Lord Howe Island and “QF” codeshare services); and
  • Emirates operated flights between and within Europe, The Middle East, North Africa, Asia, New Zealand and Australia when booked with either a “QF” or “EK” flight number on your ticket.

Please note, that the additional non ticketed Frequent Flyer Tier checked baggage allowance does not apply to “QF” codeshare services operated by carriers other than Qantas, QantasLink and Emirates and is not cumulative. For example, whether you are a Silver Qantas Frequent Flyer, a Qantas Club member, or both, the same allowance applies. Please ensure you check the operating carrier’s baggage website/policy prior to travelling.

Your Sporting Equipment:

Sporting equipment can be included as part of your checked baggage allowance, subject to the sporting equipment requirements and codeshare exceptions. Each item checked in is one piece. Charges will apply for any baggage carried in addition to the checked baggage allowance.

You may purchase an Additional Baggage Allowance in advance to save on airport excess baggage rates. The carriage of baggage over and above the free baggage allowance is subject to space being available.

Some sporting equipment such as surfboards, surf skis and windsurfers (sailboards) may not be able to be carried as checked baggage and will need to be sent as freightThis link will open in a new window.. Freight charges will apply.

Note: The maximum weight of any piece of checked baggage is 32kg (70lb). All items must be properly and securely packed.

For Jetstar baggage information please refer to Jetstar.comThis link will open in a new window.

Bicycles:

To be accepted for carriage on Qantas operated services, bicycles must be suitably packed in a bike box. Bike boxes can be purchased from most Australian Qantas Terminals. Customers can travel with their own bike box, however it must not exceed the dimensions and must be properly and securely packed.

Qantas bike pack dimensions are:

  • Length: 140cm (55in)
  • Width: 30cm (12in)
  • Height: 80cm (32in)

Before bicycles can be accepted they must be packed as follows:

  • Tyres must be deflated
  • Pedals must be removed
  • Handle bars must be fixed parallel to the frame
  • If the bicycles length exceeds 140cm (55in), the front wheel should be removed and fixed beside the rear wheel, inside the bike box

Snow Ski/Snowboard:

Snow skis and snowboards must be protected in a ski bag. If the snow skiing equipment and your checked baggage exceed your checked baggage allowance, airport excess baggage rates apply.

No more than one pair of skis, one pair of stocks/poles and one pair of ski boots is permitted per passenger.

Fishing Equipment:

To be accepted for carriage, they must be protected in a PVC cylinder with screw ends, which can be obtained from a local fishing store, or in PVC plumbing or electrical tubing. Fishing rods must not be strapped to suitcases and the length can not exceed 277cm (109in) on Qantas operated services.

If the fishing equipment and your checked baggage exceed your checked baggage allowance, airport excess baggage rates apply. For example, if your baggage allowance is one piece and you are travelling with a bag and a fishing rod, this will amount to two pieces and you will need to pay for the additional piece.

Golfing Equipment:

Golf bags and collapsible buggies are carried as baggage and are exempt from normal linear dimension restrictions on Qantas operated services.

Surfboard/Surf Ski:

To carry a surfboard or surf ski as baggage, fins must be removed where possible and placed in an enclosed compartment or taped to the board. Paddles must also be taped to the board. Qantas Check-in will attach a Fragile tag to the bag and you must complete and sign the limited release portion of the baggage tag.

Australian Domestic and International Routes:

Only accepted if enclosed in a surfboard bag and does not exceed 32kg (70lb) in weight and 277cm (109in)^ in length. Any additional bags will each be assessed at the Airport Excess Baggage rates. You can pre-purchase Additional Baggage Allowance at lower rates than Airport Excess Baggage rates.

Boards/skis that exceed 277cm (109in)^ in length must be sent as freight and freight charges will apply.

Note: Due to size restrictions some equipment may not travel on the same aircraft as the customer.

^ Maximum Surfboard or Surf Ski bag dimensions must not exceed 240cm in length for customers travelling on QantasLink Dash 8 (Q200/300) aircraft.

Note: Due to size restrictions some equipment may not travel on the same aircraft as the customer.
