More detailed information about Virgin Australia baggage allowance and fees below:
All Virgin Australia passengers are limited to 7kg of carry-on, in one bag no larger than 48x34x23cm.
Domestic and Short-Haul International flights permit up to 2 carry-on bags, but the 7kg weight limit is still in effect as the total weight of both bags combined.
Note :
1. Medical assistance items (crutches, wheelchairs, etc) are exempt from these requirements
2. Guests travelling with infants may carry on an extra bag containing articles for use in the cabin such as nappies and baby food
3. Guests may take small musical instruments onboard as carry-on baggage provided that each instrument does not exceed dimensions of 85cm x 34cm x 23cm (total linear dimensions 142cm). Each musical instrument counts towards the guest’s carry-on allowance (substitutes for a piece with total linear dimensions of 105cm in domestic and International short haul flights and 115cm in International Long haul flights).
Bulky Carry-on Baggage
Virgin Australia may accept bulky or fragile items above the standard carry-on baggage size, such as large musical instruments or diplomatic baggage, to be carried in the aircraft cabin. Guests may need to purchase an additional seat to accommodate these items.
Note: Virgin Australia requires a minimum of 15 days’ notice, prior to the day of travel, for bulky cabin items to be approved for carriage.
Personal Items
In addition to the carry-on baggage allowance, one of the following personal items may be carried in the cabin:
– A laptop computer^, handbag, pocketbook or purse (of reasonable size)
– A wrap, a blanket, or an overcoat
– An umbrella without metal points, or a walking stick
– A small camera or a pair of binoculars
– A reasonable amount of reading matter
– A pair of crutches or prosthetic devices – for use, provided that the guest is dependent on them for mobility
^A laptop in thin satchel-style laptop bag is considered to be a personal item. A laptop in a larger laptop bag will be counted as part of a guest’s carry-on allowance.
Liquids, Aerosols and Gels
Guests are permitted to carry liquids, aerosols, and/or gels (with caps) in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml each. All containers must fit comfortably inside a single 1 litre transparent, completely sealed, re-sealable plastic bag. This bag must be presented separately at the security screening point.
The free checked baggage allowance is determined by fare type and your “Velocity” membership status. It is a quite complex system, as different allowances for every Fare/Velocity combination exist depending on the length of the flight.
Usually the only situation where you will have to pay for your first checked bag is when flying on Domestic flights in a “Saver” seat if you are not a Velocity member, or you status is Red.
It is possible to purchase an increased allowance online through the Virgin Australia website. You will get a much better price than arriving at the airport with excess baggage.

When packing a bike, remember to:

An instrument replaces one of the guest’s pieces of carry-on baggage (equivalent to a piece with total linear dimensions of 105cm), and the weight counts toward the guest’s 7kg total carry-on allowance.
Guests are asked to measure their musical instrument before arriving at the airport. It is recommended that guests board their aircraft promptly in order to stow their instrument in an overhead locker.
Larger musical instruments (exceeding dimensions of 85cm x 34cm x 23cm) are not allocated an additional baggage allowance and are managed as follows:
- A musical instrument is considered to be a piece of baggage for the purposes of our baggage policy.
