How much carry-on baggage items you may carry on board is determined by the service class you have booked:
Economy Class: 1 x 8 kg
Business Class: 2 x 8 kg
Your carry-on baggage may not exceed the dimensions 55 x 40 x 23 cm and the weight of 8 kg. It must be stored in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. Please consider this when packing. At the airport, the dimensions and the weight will be checked consistently at the boarding gate at the latest. Carry-on baggage which is too big or too heavy must be checked in. This will be charged if your free baggage allowance is exceeded. Please note, that the charges at the gate are considerably higher and can only be paid by credit card.
A foldable garment baggage with the maximum dimensions of 57 x 54 x 15 cm is also regarded as carry-on baggage.
In addition to your carry-on baggage you may take one personal item with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 10 cm into the passenger cabin, e.g. one lady’s handbag or one laptop bag or one shoulder-strapped bag.
Are you travelling with children up to 2 years of age?
Then you may take one of the following items on board:
- 1 baby basket or
- 1 child car seat or
- 1 fully collapsible stroller (max. 10 kg)
If you require baby food for your infant during the flight or if you need medicine due to your health condition, please carry these items in your hand luggage or personal item. Passengers with reduced mobility may take one pair of crutches or any other kind of prostheses into the passenger cabin.
Important: Depending on the operating aircraft type and/or fulfilling safety requirements of national authorities, in exceptional cases the hand baggage allowance for our Business class passengers may be reduced to 1 piece of hand baggage only.
Carry-on baggage restrictions
For security reasons, the European Commission has restricted the transportation of liquids (LAGs – liquids, aerosols and gels) in carry-on baggage when departing at an EU airport. Please note that outside EU, similar regulations regarding liquids may be in force. Such information usually may be obtained at the internet page of the respective airport. LAGs in carry-on baggage shall be presented separately from carry-on baggage at the screening checkpoint.
Liquids in this context includes pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurized containers, such as toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, shaving foam and other items with similar consistencies.

Flying with Austrian Airlines sports equipment is part of your free baggage allowance if its size with respect to number and weight is within the stated limits.
Due to capacity reasons we can only transport sports equipment which has been confirmed in advance for your entire journey. Therefore please register your sports baggage under +43 5 1766 1000 or via our contact form. We check, if the required service can be confirmed on the flights you have booked. We ask for your understanding, that unconfirmed sports equipment will not be accepted by our check-in staff. Possible follow up costs (e.g. storage) have to be borne by you. This is also applicable for ski equipment irrespective of whether your ski bags are within your free baggage allowance or will be checked in as excess baggage.
If the transport of your sports equipment is exceeding your free baggage allowance, sport equipment charges are applicable to defined items. Sports equipment which is not contained in this list or which exceeds the defined contents is charged according to the normal excess baggage rates.
